Use a clear font, that’s easy to read, rather than an ornate, difficult to decipher one.
Then, make sure there’s contrast between the text and the background, and that your font is large enough to read. Research has shown that 10pt may not be large enough, and you might have people with poor eyesight visiting – try to cater to their needs too.
Probably the most important tip you’ll get! Before you upload your site and “go public” check each and every link, to make sure it points to the right place, and that it works.
Look at your site as a visitor would, and identify problem areas, or, if you’re unable to disconnect enough, ask a friend to critique it for you. Better to find and fix problems before you launch!

There will always be improvements you can make (maybe you can ask for visitor’s feedback?) but getting it working right, and easy to use before launching is critical, so follow these tips, and get yourself a functional, useable site!
Make sure that links to pages and other navigation features are clear and easy to find. If necessary, include a sitemap page, which helps visitors to see all pages, and sub pages, in turn assisting them to find the content they need.
Basically, when designing any site, you need to put yourself into your visitors’ shoes, and consider their needs. Accessibility, navigation, font size, graphics and overall usability all come into play here, and should be carefully considered. It’s a tricky balance, but getting it right is critical!
While you obviously can’t get all of these issues right all the time, you will need to make decisions that will allow your site to be viewed by the maximum number of people, no matter their search engine or operating system.
For the same reason, it’s advisable to avoid designing sites with complex Flash animations, or Java script, which would require visitors to first download software, unless of course you are sure that they will take the time and effort to do so.
By keeping it simple, and designing for maximum accessibility, rather than maximum impact, you might find that you have more, rather than fewer visitors, and that they stay longer, and return more frequently.
At the end of the day, Joe Public wants fast information. He doesn’t care how flashy your site is, or maybe he doesn’t even notice! What he will notice is long-winded loading, tricky navigation or a site that makes him have to scroll side to side to see everything.
I can’t express how much I’m in love with Typekit. It’s quite possible the best service to serve up some sweet new fonts on your website. I assume they’re the best as I really haven’t tried anyone else out. Well I did try embedding fonts using myfonts service, but the quality was bad… ie. the fonts are jagged and don’t look as smooth as Typekits.Typekit Logo
